Jump quick for a great deal. Dell just started a 15% off if you order more than $400 in E&A, stackable with other deals. This 15% is automatically applied when you checkout. The dell forums has a 20% off the UltraSharp 2407WFP Wide-Screen Black Flat Panel Monitor, but you need to request the coupon today. I requested the coupon yesterday, got it this morning, and it actually expires tomorrow, Nov 23. Here is the link to the forums post: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums...ge?board.id=gen_mem_perks&message.id=4

You will need to join the forums, then e-mail the address as instructed in the dell forums post. Then you just wait around for them to e-mail you the coupon. That brings your total to $543 before tax, not bad, and posted elsewhere in this forum.

If you have an Amex with membership rewards, pony up for an even better deal. For 5000 points, you can get a $50 off ecert for dell home E&A purchases, dropping it to $493 before tax. Just placed my order!

Pickup Truck

Ideal one would have:
  • an interior you can wash with a hose
  • lay 4' x 8' sheet flat in the bed, tailgate doesn't have to close, but it'd be nice
    • Honda Ridgeline is only midsized where you can do this?
  • hybrid powertrain gives better gas mileage and low end torque
  • 4 door cab, where rear doors swing backwards (suicide like Mazda RX-8) to make entering easier (See Ford F-150 regular and extended cabs)
  • electronic vehical stability assist
  • color: white
  • spotlight
  • and the rest

RAIDed storage

4 x 400 GB drives (Seagate or Hitachi)
RAID 5
external enclosure - 6 bays
SATA interface

How to run cables between the external enclosure and the card? No SATA RAID card exists yet designed to communicate with an external hard drive.
Highpoint eSATA no RAID 5, drives can only be paired.

I'd prefer external
  • move the thermal load out of the main box
  • keep the computer small
  • don't need a huge power supply for the main box

Drives:
SATA with TCQ but not that important

Controller:
4/8 port
PCI-x

Could the cable between the computer and the RAID box be FireWire800? 800 Mbps, you can expect about peak transfer rates of 100 MBps so it looks like there won't be much of a performance hit.
